Speed and Collision Safety

Skiing and snowboarding offer freedom and flow, but they also rely on awareness and shared responsibility.  Speed and collision safety play a key role in creating a positive experience on snow.

Several key points of the Alpine Responsibility Code directly relate to speed and collision prevention—and they apply every time you’re on the slopes.

Stay in control

Staying in control means choosing a speed that allows you to stop or avoid people or objects easily and quickly.

In many areas of the hill, slower speeds are appropriate and expected—particularly on green runs, in learning areas, near lift zones, at intersections, and on busy slopes. These shared spaces require extra awareness and patience.

In more advanced terrain with good visibility and fewer people, more speed may be appropriate. Even then, staying in control remains essential. Being in control means being able to react promptly to what’s ahead, adjust your line, and avoid others at all times.

Respect the right of way

People downhill always have the right of way. Being aware of what’s ahead and adjusting your line or speed accordingly helps prevent close calls and builds confidence for everyone sharing the slope.

Look before you start or merge

Before starting downhill or entering a run, always look uphill and ensure the path is clear. Taking a moment to check for oncoming traffic helps keep movement predictable and reduces the risk of collisions.

Follow signs and guidance

On-hill signs and directions from ski area staff are there to support safe flow and spacing. Observing them helps manage shared spaces and keeps everyone moving smoothly.

Awareness supports enjoyment

Speed and collision safety isn’t about limiting fun—it helps protect it. When skiers and riders make thoughtful choices about speed, space, and awareness, the slopes feel more welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

Each run is an opportunity to apply the Alpine Responsibility Code. Staying in control, respecting others, and making smart decisions help ensure great days on snow—for all ability levels.
