Using lifts safely is an important part of enjoying a day on the slopes.
For many skiers and snowboarders, chairlifts are a routine part of the experience, while for others—especially children and newer participants—they can feel unfamiliar at first. Clear expectations and shared habits help make every lift ride smooth and predictable.
While your local ski area may not have a chairlift, there are many ski resorts across Alberta with a variety of lifts—and you may have the chance to visit some of them this season.
Use the restraint bar for safety
Lowering the restraint bar after loading is an important safety practice.
While falls from chairlifts are uncommon, the restraint bar helps reduce the risk of falling from the chair.
Chairlifts are designed to operate safely, but carrying guests high above the ground means that even a small slip or loss of balance can have serious consequences.
Using the restraint bar helps protect riders during moments that can be unpredictable, such as sudden stops, weather, or distractions that may cause someone to lose balance.
Just as important as lowering the bar after loading is keeping it lowered for the entire ride, waiting until posted signage indicates it is time to raise the restraint bar for unloading.
In addition to its safety role the bar helps with comfort, especially for those restraint bars that include footrests.
Communicate before lowering the bar
Lowering the restraint bar should always be communicated to the other passengers on your chair. A simple call such as “bar coming down” gives everyone time to prepare and adjust their position.
Clear communication:
- Prevents surprises
- Supports guests with different comfort levels
- Encourages courtesy and cooperation
Raising the bar should also be communicated clearly and done only at the final approach to the unload area, following posted signage and ski area guidance.
Shared habits make a difference
Chairlift safety is built on small, consistent actions—communication, awareness, and patience. These habits help ensure that every lift ride is smooth, predictable, and positive.
By working together and communicating clearly, we help make chairlifts a comfortable part of the day—so everyone can focus on enjoying their time on snow.
